Hair & Beauty
Curriculum Intent
Hair & Beauty at Co-op Academy Strinesdale allows our students to develop applied knowledge in areas relate to working within the beauty industry and prepares our students to lay a foundational knowledge prior to potentially pursuing a career within the industry. This subject complements the learning in many GCSE programmes such as Science, Health & Social Care and Enterprise. The qualification can lead to preparation for studying the subject further at college, which can lead to various employment opportunities and apprenticeships. Our ambitious offer enables students to reach a level 2 qualification which goes above and beyond the qualification and skill needed to enter this industry.

Unit: Unit 201- Exploring the world of hair and beauty

Content: By the end of this unit, we expect students will know and understand key features of working in the hair and beauty sector. Occupational roles and Services offered within the Industry and trades and business links. Practical the students will develop the use of products and Equipment. Hair structure - Alpha keratin and the effects of humidity on the hair. Long blow dry, Shampoo, Setting/ wet set/pin curls, Make up smoky eyes, Cleanse/tone/moisturise.

Unit: Unit 201- Exploring the world of hair and beauty

Content: By the end of this unit, we expect students will know and understand key features of working in the hair and beauty sector. Topics include, the key features of hair and beauty in ancient eras and decades of the past 100 years. Hair and beauty in today's society, technological advancements and Cosmetics today-products and equipment are available today/changes to the economy. Social factors- Social diversity, culture and celebrity impact for products, services and equipment. The possible causes and signs allergic reactions and Anatomy and physiology terminology of hair, skin and nails. Conditions and how they can affect or limit treatments and services. Key features of hair and beauty trends from ancient Egypt, Greece and Japan. Cosmetic products safety regulations 2008. Practical: Demo Egyptian/Greek braids, Egyptian/Greek make up, Demo Japanese hair and make up. Key features of hair and beauty trends from 1940-50's, Demo Victory rolls, 40's/50's make up.

Content: By the end of this unit, we expect students will know and understand key features of science in hair and beauty. Topics include: The effects of acids and alkalis on hair and skin. The scientific principles of ingredients in hair and beauty products. Ethical consideration for testing cosmetics on animals. The location and main function of the hair structure, function of the nail structure. Practical: Key features of hair and beauty trends from 1920-30's and the 60's 70's. Demo: Demo-make up 1920'S-30'S, 1960'S-70'S.

Unit: Unit 202-Science in the hair and beauty sector

Content: By the end of this unit, we expect students will know and understand key features of working in the hair and beauty sector and science in hair and beauty. The skin structure and functions-Sun and the effects on skin. The functions of, skin - SHAPES. bacterial fungal and viral Infections. Non-contagious conditions of the the hair - Non-contagious conditions of skin. Practical: Key features of hair and beauty trends from the 1980's. Demo for sweeping blow dry/crimping-demo-make up beehive- back combing, Chopstick for afro. Design planning Synoptic examples.

Unit: Unit 202-Science in the Hair and Beauty sector, Unit 203-Design in the Hair and Beauty Sector

Content: By the end of this unit, we expect students will know and understand key features of Science in hair and beauty and design in the hair and beauty sector. Nails, functions and structure. Nail diseases and disorders. Design planning - Design planning - assignment (12 mark) questions, Past Papers, Revision, Design Planning. Practical: Working towards all practical tasks learnt so far formative.

Throughout Unit 1 and Unit 2, students will be assessed on exploring the world of hair and beauty.

Throughout Unit 3 and Unit 4, students will be assessed on Exploring the world of hair and beauty and science of hair and beauty. They will also complete formative assessments of the practical skills learnt.

Throughout Unit 5 and Unit 6, students will be assessed on science of hair and beauty and design in the hair and beauty sector. They will also complete formative assessments of the practical skills learnt.
