Curriculum Intent
In the mathematics department we aim to provide students with a creative, challenging and connected curriculum where students can make links across mathematical concepts. Our students are encouraged to develop their mathematical fluency through rapid recall and accurate application of key mathematical knowledge and skills. Our students are challenged to use mathematical language to develop reasoning by making generalisations, conjectures and arguments as well as providing justification and proofs. Our students are guided to be resilient in problem solving by breaking down increasingly complex mathematical scenarios into a series of simple steps.
The curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to build on the core concepts from the KS2 National Curriculum so that automaticity is achieved with each mathematical topic, ensuring the building blocks of mathematical understanding are secure and progress is consolidated. The breadth and depth of our curriculum allows students to succeed through Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and beyond. We design and deliver our curriculum inclusivity in mind, using a 'teaching for understanding' philosophy. Our approach to lessons at Key Stage 3 ensures students are able to understand topics using both procedural and conceptual variation and mathematical representations to provide a deeper understanding, thus avoiding the reliance on guess work and trial and error.
At Key Stage 4 we look to challenge students to consolidate and build upon their learning at Key Stage 3 and introduce them increasingly complex and sophisticated problems. We look to build the cultural capital of our students by posing mathematical problems in a variety of contexts and ensuring that real-life application is explicit. Our enrichment at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 ensures students receive insight into some of the most diverse and influential figures and their findings in the history of mathematics and the impact they have on the world we live in today.
