Ethics & RE
Curriculum Intent
Ambitious offer: Our curriculum takes into consideration both knowledge and skills. We explore the big ideas: Why do people believe what they do? How do founders of religions effect their followers? How do beliefs influence lives such as festivals? How do people treat each other and how do religions and societies respond to these actions? Why does evil exist and how do people respond to it? How do conflicts occur and what impact do they have on people? Why is justice important? what is the role of punishment? How do people become an extremist? How do religions and societies respond to extreme actions? What are the ethical understandings of life and death?
Determined Learners: The RS curriculum is designed to enable students make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs. Understanding what these beliefs mean within their tradition recognising how and why sources of authority are used and expressed and interpreted in different ways. Students will also develop skills of interpretation and evaluation. Students will examine and explain how and why people put their religion and beliefs into action in diverse way, within their everyday lives, within their communities and the wider world, appreciating different ways of life and expressing meanings.
Passports to success: The RS/Ethics curriculum in focussed on developing foundation knowledge to support further development of understanding and application into everyday life. The structure of learning is built to project and support the development and building upon previous knowledge, linking back to earlier topics throughout the 5 years of learning. KS3 learning will provide a foundation knowledge and understanding leading onto the GCSE and allowing for all students to deepen their knowledge and become experts. Students will also look to apply their learning to everyday life by developing an in-depth understanding of the community they live in and the people they interact with. Students will understand the impact beliefs have within their lives so they can develop a sense of understanding and empathy.
